I decided I wanted to toy around with photographing food against white. Don't get me wrong, I love the atmosphere of editorial but there is something just beautiful about the simplicity of objects on white. Look forward to my future post about this project!

Anatomy

A year ago I created a series that I called Illuminated Vegetables.  In this project I utilized the technique of light painting. I decided to further my study by analyzing the anatomical structure of vegetables. I cross-sectioned the vegetables and photographed them from all angles individually. Then I presented the objects by compositing them together in a line.

The Deathstar

 

 

The Long Island guys from "The World We Knew" performed at the Deathstar located in Downtown Provo as a part of the "Spring Fling Tour" on March 31st, 2011.  The Deathstar has recently entered the downtown Provo music scene, sandwiching itself between the known Velour and Muse Venues. The sign on the building reads Legion but what many have yet to discover is the overlooked music scene found behind it's doors. I was on assignment to photograph small music venues and during my research came across the Deathstar. On my way to photograph the venue, I stopped to take a few exterior shots only to run into Tyler, the manager of the venue. As I chatted with Tyler, he invited me to come in and check out the show. I've been to a ton of concerts during my college years, but I must admit I have never attended a metal concert. Upon entering the Deathstar, I found an assortment of colorful friendly faces that just wanted to have a good time. I was really impressed with "The World We Knew" and they're great interaction with the audience. One of the greatest things that I love about small venues is the humility the bands have and gratitude they have for their fans. I guess one could say that there is an even playing field and an atmosphere mimicking friends just goofing off.

Musican @ F Uptown Platform @ Broadway & Lafayette

A continuation of my Subway Musicians Project. 

My experience with the Accordion Man playing on the F line Uptown Platform at Broadway and Lafayette. March Tenth I spent the evening riding the subway lines all over Manhattan on a hunt for Subway Musicians. I had just walked down the steps to the platform and discovered a treasure playing in front of me. With a beanie on his head and sitting on a type of case the man continued to play. There is something about the sound of an accordion that just makes me smile. I began to capture a few images placed a bill in the man's red bucket and continued to photograph.

Like so many of the musicians I photographed in NYC. I do not know this man's name, where he is from or the trials he has faced. But I like to think that I might know. I'd like to think that this  man comes from a large Italian family that is surrounded with love. This accordion man may play in the subway terminals for a few extra dollars but unlike some I believe he really does enjoy it. During the time I spent with this man he never spoke a word. Instead he wore a soft smile on his face and his tender eyes followed me as I photographed. As I left I said Thank You, he gave me a courteous nod and then I departed.

The Man Who Inspired It All

I came to New York with the idea to photograph street performers. Then I met a small Spanish violinist and my perspective changed. He was standing in a tunnel as I was transferring from the B-line over to the 7-line at 42nd street and 5th avenue. Dressed in bright red, standing just barely 4'9'', he was playing the most gorgeous melody. I don't know his story but i wish i did. I tried to ask him some questions but he only spoke spanish. Although we lacked verbal communication, the wrinkles in his face seemed to show all the years of hard labor.  His eyes told his story, maybe not the specific details, but there was a sadness in his eyes. I wanted capture this, not for reasons of exploitation but show what great respect I have for these hardworking performers.

This desire led me into some of the most memorable experiences while in New York. Because of this one man, I spent every free moment in NYC running around subway terminals listening for the sweet sound of music. All in all I photographed over 21 Subway musicians.  I love people, I love their stories and I am impressed with the talented musicians I have encountered. As I said my goodbye to the violinist, I slipped some money into his case and bid him gracias.

Future Riding Champion

A continuation of my Children & their Ambition's project. This is 7-year old Andre, the future riding champion of the world. I met up with Andre and his mother at one of his riding lessons. I spent nearly 2 hours outside in freezing weather, but it was worth every second. At first Andre was a little resistant to me photographing him but by the end of the lesson he was giving me some major personality.

Velour

I just started working on a project right now involving photographing small music venues and rising stars. Friday night I went to the Velour to attend a concert where the Band Truman was featured. I photographed the concert there. I 'm still trying to figure out where I want to take this project but for the most part I am happy with the results.

The Future Harpist

I'm working on a project documenting children and their dreams for their future. Here are a couple images of the first shoot. I'm still trying to refine the project and create a title that sums up all my ideas. Some names that I am toying around with have been "Future Stars" or The Future Generation." I'm looking to photograph children that have a strong idea of what they want to be when they grow up and are working towards that goal. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

The Peterson Swing Set

This is part of an on going personal project that I've been working on. I photographed my niece on our family swing set that my dad and grandpa built. I have little memory of this swing set not being in my parent's backyard. Located in the top left corner of the set, my name is carved into the wood. I use to have a wood rocking horse below my name but unfortunately it is now deceased.
